To the Australian Rowing Community,
We hope this email finds you well during these unprecedented times of uncertainty around the COVID-19 pandemic.
Many of you will have seen today’s announcement by Rowing Australia (RA) to suspend, with immediate effect, activities at our two National Training Centres (NTCs) and the announcement from Australian Olympic Committee (AOC) in regards to the International Olympic Committee (IOC), supported by the International Paralympic Committee (IPC), that it is considering a number of scenarios around the Tokyo 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games, including postponement.
We, as a rowing community, all have a responsibility to heed Government restrictions and help to ‘flatten the curve’ when it comes to COVID-19.
As the Prime Minister said last night, ‘Practicing good hygiene and keeping a healthy physical distance between individuals is our most powerful weapon in fighting this virus and saving lives.’
The health and wellbeing of the Australian Rowing Team, NTC athletes, para-athletes, coaches and staff, and more broadly all within the community, is our main priority during these times of global uncertainty.
The news today from the AOC, in regards to the IOC and IPC plans, will be disruptive for our athletes, but we have confidence in the resilience of our rowers who will continue to be focused and determined to work through any scenario that we may face to get to Tokyo.
We will work to support our athletes, as they adapt to these changes, with our partners Sport Australia, the Australian Institute of Sport, the Australian Olympic Committee, Paralympics Australia and the RA Athletes’ Commission.
We encourage all our community to adhere to Government restrictions around social distancing and good hygiene. We would strongly advise clubs to cease operation and seek alternative ways to train, adapt and support each other in these times of change. If you do choose to train alone, please have a plan in place for your safety and wellbeing, as well as others, in line with the Government restrictions.
RA will be regularly updating its digital channels with alternative ways to maintain a healthy lifestyle during this time.
